Affordable Housing

We can increase development of affordable housing in Rochester with public/private partnerships. A more efficient regulatory structure will expedite construction and development of cost-effective projects. I have experience redeveloping distressed buildings into affordable housing, working with the city’s permitting processes and understanding housing regulations.

The Maxfield study found that Rochester has a deficit of single-family homes. Our city needs around 900 new homes built per year. In 2023, roughly 200 single-family homes were built. My opponent has voted against nearly every home development project that has come before the City Council. I will vote to approve good projects that increase our housing supply as Rochester grows.
Parks, Trails, and Recreational Facilities
Public Safety

Public safety is the largest component of the city budget. Nothing that comes before the City Council is more important than making sure our neighborhoods and streets are safe. I support the community policing efforts of the Rochester Police Department and the Fire Department first responders. I will be an advocate for public safety on the City Council.
Transportation

I support maintaining safe, quality roads in Rochester. As I’ve knocked on doors in Ward 4, I’ve heard many concerns about speed of traffic in neighborhoods. I’m committed to safety and pledge to get any concerns answered by city staff and will support city council action when necessary.

The Link Rapid Transit bus will be built with state funds and operations will be funded by the Mayo Clinic. I support this project to improve transportation into downtown for clinic employees and patients, as well others that want to take advantage of this new service coming in the next few years. My opponent voted against this funding that will not come from any local taxes.

As your representative to city government, I will bring forward your ideas, questions, and concerns to city staff and to the City Council. I will keep you updated on city happenings through social media.

I am a big supporter of Neighborhood Associations in Rochester will be in touch regularly with the Neighborhood Associations in Ward 4.
Silver Lake

As I knock on doors and listen, it is clear that voters in the 4th Ward want Silver Lake preserved as a lake. While my opponent has stated that she would like it returned to a river, I pledge to protect Silver Lake.

The current City Council has approved an engineering study for an upcoming Silver Lake dam replacement project. It calls for removal of the current dam and replacement with a non-mechanical structure.The Army Corps of Engineers will certify the project as not impacting flood control.

Advocates of the dam are pointing to new bike trails that would go underneath Broadway on both sides of the river. It is important to note that the proposed trails are NOT part of the Silver Lake project and there is not a funding source identified for new trails.

I will only vote to approve the Silver Lake dam replacement if it preserves Silver Lake and makes financial sense for Rochester taxpayers.
Homelessness

I personally experienced homelessness as a child when we lost the family farm. We received help from the community that allowed us recover and get back on our feet. I’m a volunteer at The Landing, offering my services as a barber. While cutting hair, I get to hear the unique stories of those who are in difficult situations.

Persons experiencing homelessness need assistance. Our community should respond not only by providing a bed for the night, but services to help our neighbors move forward to a better tomorrow. I am encouraged by City, County, and non-profits partnering together with the Any Path Home program and look forward to contributing to solutions.

Police Chief Franklin came to City Council and asked for an ordinance to ban camping in city parks. The tent encampments were becoming unsafe for the camp residents. I support Chief Franklin and the camping ban. It passed 4-3 with my opponent voting against it. The ordinance only allows enforcement when a shelter bed is available. Following the camping ban, Rochester has seen a large reduction in tent encampments and improved public safety.
Effective Use of Public Resources

I support programs and services that make Rochester a great place to live while being fiscally responsible. My opponent abstained from voting on the budget in 2021. I will do my homework to provide the oversight that is the duty of City Council members. Being fiscally responsible isn’t just for budget and tax levy votes. I pledge to be watching over Rochester’s expenses at every City Council meeting.
